New business picked up at the Federal National Mortgage Association, while the secondary lender’s book of business increased and serious home loan delinquency dropped to the lowest level in more than four years.

The Washington, D.C.-based firm reported $77.298 billion in new business acquisitions for April. Business strengthened from the prior month, when volume amounted to $71.448 billion.

Secondary activity also improved from the same month last year, when new business acquisitions totaled $52.470 billion.

Purchase Business Persists Despite Holiday Week

But refinance business was a different story.

A lender that ranked among the 25-biggest lenders in Mortgage Daily’s first-quarter originator ranking has named a former college basketball player as its new chief executive officer.

United Shore Financial Services LLC reported that residential loan originations during the first quarter of this year were $2.8 billion.

That landed the Birmingham, Mich.-based company in the 21st spot on Mortgage Daily’s first-quarter 2013 ranking of U.S. mortgage lenders.

Continued Improvement for Mortgage Insurers

New business continued to build at U.S. mortgage insurers, and another monthly improvement appears to be on the horizon.

Members of the Mortgage Insurance Companies of America insured 46,393 home loans for $11.373 billion during April, according to monthly operational data released Friday.

April activity included around $4.9 billion in policies written by Genworth Mortgage Insurance Corp., $2.4 billion generated by Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corp. and $4.1 billion in new business at Radian Guaranty Inc.
